He headed to the pale pink and yellow bedroom, glancing back at the bathroom door wistfully. “Come on, Sarah. Hurry up,” he muttered as Kylee turned a deep pink the harder she cried. He stared at her mouthful of smooth, toothless gums and her tiny fists curling tight as they moved about. “Okay, kid. I guess we don’t have a choice here. Let’s get you changed.” He glanced around the cheerful room at the stuffed animals piled next to a rocking chair, zeroing in on the pine changing table and the stacks of diapers and wipes lying tidy on the shelf above.

He awkwardly lay Kylee down on the soft white pad, found a package of unopened diapers, and quickly scanned the directions. As Kylee continued to cry, he pulled a diaper off the shelf. “Look at these things. My hand’s bigger than this.” He located the sides with the tape and put it down next to her, just like the picture showed, then unbuttoned her sleeper and the white onesie secured at her crotch. “How many layers are you wearing?” Blowing out a breath, he pulled the diaper tape next. “Here goes nothing.” Easing the diaper away, he swore. “Jesus, this isn’t right. It’s black and yellow. I think we need to take you back to the hospital.” He focused on the browning raisin protruding from her stomach. “And look at that thing on your belly button. It didn’t look like that yesterday.” Completely flustered now, he yanked a wad of wipes from the bin and knocked the diaper cream to the floor.

Kylee’s short gasping cries shrilled louder.

He swung them behind a tree and peered out. Whatever she wanted to talk about suddenly lost importance. The villains following him were the more immediate problem.

“Shhhh.” He pressed a finger to her lips.

Two men in top hats stepped off the gravel path and picked their way across the lawn.

Beau marched C.C. deeper into the grove around trees and shrubs. Then through an archway of fragrant vines to a fountain struggling to reflect hazy moonlight. They needed to stay quiet and hidden.

“Before you drag me any further into the bushes—”

Didn’t the woman know the meaning of shhhh? She would give away their hiding place if he didn’t do something quick. He pulled her to him and covered her mouth with his. Mint and vanilla filled his senses.

Her sweet, almost maidenly response surprised him. No, she probably wasn’t a tart. Just a hasty stolen kiss, yet he couldn’t help appreciate the tantalizing fit of her supple lips under his and how her body softened against him. His heart stammered and launched into a faster beat. Lifting his head, he gazed about her bewildered, upturned countenance, breathlessly poised for a man’s kisses. Hmm, not entirely a maiden either.

Perhaps another quick kiss would clarify matters?

ONE

“CUT!” the director called.

Oliver breathed a sigh of relief. He was in dire need of finding a bathroom; the straps of his flying harness were cutting into his full bladder. On the street below, the crew wasted no time disassembling set dressings and props. The cameramen turned off their equipment and congratulated themselves on a good day, while the dolly grips trudged the cameras down aluminum tracks. A twinge tightened in his groin and Oliver shifted, trying to redistribute the pressure. It was no use.

“Come on guys,” he grumbled, but he was thirty-feet in the air, who could hear him?

The more hustle and bustle beneath his booted feet, the more he was convinced they’d forgotten their superhero…again. With his thumb and forefinger in his mouth, he blew a shrill whistle. “Hey! Will someone get me down?”

Dean Clemens, the movie director, lifted his head to the sky. “Sorry, pal! Mike, let Ollie down.”

“Thank you!” Oliver called out and the rigging creaked and groaned as he slowly descended.

"You heard me. I live here. She lives here. We were getting along just fine before you came

along."

"Getting along? Are you telling me you're seeing Gia? Is that what you're saying?"

His brother looked away for a moment then back at him. "No."

"Oh, so you're just pissed I got to her first."

Russ stepped in until they were nearly chest to chest with each other. Dane didn't remember the

two inches Russ grew more than him, but now he saw them.

"Don't worry, though. I'll pick up the pieces when you break her heart and go back to your little

job."

He couldn't help it Dane shoved him against the truck. "I don't think she's a piece of property

that can be claimed with finder's keepers."

Russ shoved back and even raised his fist to him before they both realized that Gia was standing there watching with a hand over her mouth and the bag of gifts for their mother.

Russ lowered his hand, opened the door to the truck, and a moment later he sped away.

Dane scrubbed his hand over his face. "Damn it."

"You forgot these," she said holding the bag out to him.

He took the bag from her. "I'm sorry about that."

"You have to go after him. You have to fix this."

"Fix this? He will be fine. He's a grown man and he doesn't need"

She held up both her hands. "Fix it, Dane. You cannot let him go on like this. Especially when there is nothing to be upset about. The kisswellthe kiss was only"

He stepped in. "Don't tell me you're going to discredit that."

"I will not come between brothers."

"So you and him"

"No. We are just friends." "You said that to me too." "Do not turn this on me."

Out of frustration, he pulled his keys from his pocket. "I'll go after him and talk to him. Can I

see you tonight."

"Bachelorette party. You worry about Russell."

"This sucks," he groaned as he drug his fingers through his hair.

"Good bye, Dane," she said as she turned around and marched back to her store.

He watched her walk away and that amazing feeling that had been stirring inside of him when

he'd kissed her felt like lead now in his gut.

The Lord giving and his damn brother taketh away. Maybe it had been a mistake he thought as

he walked to his mother's car and opened the door. A few more days and he'd leave, returning to his miserable life, but without such distractions.
