Christmas in Prague by Rick Pryll

Psychological Romance
Date Published: November 24, 2018
Publisher: Foolishness Press

Christmas in Prague is the story of Joseph, a divorced American twenty-something living as an expat in Prague. He's obsessed with Karina, a Czech waitress-turned-supermodel. She's freshly back from a trip to Italy with her English teacher, and she's ready to give Joseph the attention for which he's been longing. Will his Christmas wish come true?

Excerpt

We came up out of Staroměstská metro station at the Kaprova exit. The air was clear and cold. A light snowfall had just started. Elijah and I are accosted on the sidewalk by three characters. The tallest one is dressed like a pope; tall red bishop’s hat, long white robe with a red silk stole to match. He’s carrying a crosier with a curved top like a question mark and ringing a bell. Saint Nicholas, obviously, the Greek bishop upon whom the Santa Claus legend is based. Another character is dressed all in white with a coat hanger halo, she is the Anděl (angel) I am told. She looks familiar, maybe one of the topless dancers at the place by the Charles Bridge, or a waitress at the Chapeau Rouge. Or maybe she just looks like one of those. The last character is the best - soot-covered face, hair sticking in all directions, limping along on one cloven hoof and one foot, wearing a brown fur jacket, dragging a chain and carrying a burlap sack. That is Čert or Krampus, a polymorphic figure, half-goat half-demon.The angel beamed, a bad girl hooking a sweet smile into us. I wondered if her blonde hair was a wig or not. I couldn’t tell. Krampus shouted in my face “Bububu!” and rattled his chain at me.
Mikuláš asked me a question in Czech. I told him I didn’t understand. Elijah translated, “He’s asking if you have been a good boy this year.” I put my hand on my chin and rolled my eyes heavenward. If I was not good, legend had it, Čert would take me in his sack and deliver me straight to hell. Krampus held his burlap sack open. He waved a piece of coal in my face. The angel in the push-up bra pushed forward, her hands folded together holding a basket of rock candy. A lace dress, sky blue eyeshadow and giant wings on her back. I reached out and took a piece of candy. Krampus rattled his chains in anger. They waited for me. I looked at Elijah. “You have to sing a song or recite a poem.” he said to me.
I said, “Kolo, rovno, hovno,” rolling the r in rovno as hard as my untrained tongue could. It’s a Czech rhyme that translates to “Bicycle, straight, shit.” Čert hopped up and down, one paw and one hoof, rattling his chains in glee. Mikuláš dismissed us with a wave of his holy hand. The angel took a long look at us before retreating.
“I don’t think they were impressed.” Elijah said. I unwrapped the hard candy and popped it in my mouth.
I should have said “Strč prst skrz krk”, a vowelless Czech tongue twister that translates to “Put your finger through your throat.” That would not have impressed either.

After a breathtaking journey through Iceland, Vanessa Evanston finishes her dream vacation with her two best friends in the capital city of Reykjavik—and wakes up the next morning on the ground, on a tiny island 250 kilometers north, with no memory of how she got there.

Luckily, handsome and kind-hearted local Gunnar Heimirsson stumbles upon her—unluckily, he can’t explain her mysterious journey either. Nor can anyone explain why Vanessa soon discovers “last night” actually happened a year ago, and everyone thinks she’s dead.

Iceland is known for its folklore, but beyond the elves and mountain trolls, there are other creatures: beautiful, powerful, and vengeful, known as the huldufólk. Gunnar has been alive for a century, trapped by their curse after angering them. From the far flung Westfjords to the black sands of Reynisfjara, the answer to Vanessa’s missing year might be connected to Gunnar’s punishment—as well as his long-lost wife, Hera—but the truth lies somewhere in the realm of magic, myth, and love, and Vanessa has only just discovered fairy tales are real.

Excerpt:

The path meandered up the hill, and she soon realized both the jacket and sweater were overkill as she began to sweat. She would take the jacket off at the top. Until then, she kept her eyes on the uneven ground and tried not to stumble in her too-large boots. The wind whipped harder as they climbed, adding to the difficulty.
At the summit she stopped to catch her breath, heart pounding and uncomfortably hot beneath her layers. They looked back over the town, the houses now miniature at the bottom of the slope. The water spread out glimmering in all directions. The sun hung red beneath the canopy of clouds.
“What’s it like, living so long?” She peeled the jacket off. “You’ve seen some history, huh?”
The wind ruffled his wild, loose curls. “It’s just been my life, nothing more. You see history too, every day. Do you think of it that way?”
The air rushing up under the sweater and cooling the sweat on her skin was bliss. “I guess not. Does it ever get boring?”
“As boring as it is for anyone, I suppose.” The sunset caressed his face, turning it golden. “I have things to keep me occupied.”
She gazed at him, mesmerized. God, he was handsome. Not pretty, not cute. Handsome. Solid and finely sculpted, like carved ice. His eyes held her spellbound. They were so clear, so pale and blue. They reminded her of the glacier she’d walked on with her friends, smooth and bright and so cleanly cold.
A sensation stirred deep inside her, some old, familiar feeling, much like the notion she’d had on the boat that she knew him. It felt as ancient and enduring as the land they stood on. What the hell did it mean? She couldn’t grasp or define it.
“Yeah.” She pushed her hair back from her face. “You’ve moved all around the country, fallen in love. You drive a boat. Find passed out strangers.” She smiled. “It sounds a lot more exciting than most lives, actually. More exciting than packing pills.”
“I’ve been out of the country, too.” He smiled in return. “But not for a long time.”
 “They let you leave?”
“My body is my prison, not Iceland.”
That brought up uneasy questions. Would they follow her home? Would she always be their victim, even when she left here?
“How far does their magic reach?” She tucked her hair behind her ear to keep it from blowing around. “Can you ever escape it?”
“I’ve never managed to.”  He turned, toward the flat stretch of land in front of them. Another hill rose in the distance, dark against the deep blue sky.
She draped the jacket over her arm. “I suppose we’re going up that one, too?”

“Yes, the place we’re going is a place where people don’t usually visit.”

The Crucible's Fire by Matt Parker

After having several children, parents often feel well-equipped to take on the challenges of another child. When Matt and Tammy Parker decided to add a child to their family, they had little idea of the blessings and struggles God had in store for them. The Crucible's Fire paints a picture of God's steadfast love through trials as he holds one family in the loving and protective crucible of his faithfulness. Readers will learn:

·         The raw emotion of unexpected hardship

·         How to rely on God for strength

·         The beauty of God's faithfulness when it seems all hope is lost

·         How to trust in God through their own dark night of the soul

·         The sanctification that comes only through the refining fire of trials

·        Strengthen your own trust in God's refining faithfulness as you join this family through the joys and pains of raising a special needs child.

Excerpt

The second phase of refining ore into precious metal is to place
the now broken and unrefined material into the crucible. A crucible
is a funny thing. It is designed to be heated, designed to destroy
what is undesirable within. It is permeable enough to allow heat to
pass through yet strong enough to only allow the correct amount
of heat—just enough to do its work. In it, the heat will melt away
any impurities surrounding and potentially damaging the precious
treasure the refiner seeks. The crucible is singular in purpose: expose
and remove impurity.

The crucible of God’s faithfulness does no less. Instead of a lead
pot or a ceramic cylinder, his hands hold us—broken, shattered,
bruised, impure, and full of dross. His hands shield us from the fire
that is to come but only enough to prevent our complete destruction.
He lets enough heat pass through to have its full effect on the ore.
Proverbs 17:3 says, “The crucible is for silver, and the furnace for
gold, and the Lord tests hearts.” It was as if the divine proctor said
to the class, “Study time is over. You may begin the test.”

Lizzy's Kiss by Karen Tjebben

Psychological Romantic Suspense
Date Published: November 21, 2018

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Lizzy Adams spent the summer pining for Tyson Smith, the sexy security agent whose instruction at a safety seminar saved her life. Now, every man she meets is measured against the absolute awesomeness of the brawny black man with the soulful eyes, the baritone voice that whispers over her like a velvet caress, and a smile that turns her knees to jelly. Now she just had to get him to notice her.

Tyson Smith had a lot of respect for Lizzy Adams, the spunky teacher who freed herself from the clutches of a deranged miscreant who’d wanted to take her hostage. But his concept of her wholesome ‘girl-next-door’ image was challenged the night she showed up at a company barbeque dressed as a flirty cowgirl. Always the gentleman, he managed to keep his eyes off her assets as she strolled around the farm. His mother had raised him better, but there was no denying that she was every man’s ‘American Beauty’ fantasy. But the night he’d shown up at her doorstep to help her out altered their relationship forever. Between the fear in her eyes and the baseball bat perched on her shoulder, his protective side surfaced, and he handed her a piece of his heart.

Their whirlwind romance is threatened when a man from Lizzy’s past attacks her. Sam Clark wants vengeance for his son. He blames the jurors from Jason’s trial for Jason’s death and crafts a hit list. But killing Lizzy, the scrappy survivor, is harder than he thought. After Sam fails at his first attempt on Lizzy’s life, he resolves to kill her before he’s forced into hiding. He just has to get past the big, black man who appointed himself Lizzy’s protector.

Excerpt

Sam circled the apartment complex and made his way back to his car. Fate was on his side. Lizzy walked out of her apartment with two trash bags. He’d already scoped out the garbage dumpsters on an earlier trip. In order to keep the apartment complex looking nice, the dumpsters were behind the apartments, tucked away behind tall, wooden privacy fences. That would be the perfect place to take her. Let her die among the garbage and refuse of the community.
He picked up his pace and walked around the opposite side of the building as she walked around to the back on the other side. Glancing around, he looked for anyone who could interrupt his time with her.
Lizzy walked into the garbage area. Two large garbage dumpsters and two recycle dumpsters were tucked out of sight. Setting one of the bags on the ground, she swung the other bag into the garbage dumpster. The plastic bag disappeared into the dumpster. Grabbing the remaining bag, she hefted it into the dumpster too.
Sam stepped behind the wooden slats and watched as she tossed the bags into the dumpster. Her back was to him. The thought of dumping her body into the dumpster brought a smile to his lips. She’d just disappear from sight without a trace. But if her body was discovered, it would be obvious that she’d been purposely disposed of. That revelation would destroy the appearance of a natural, fluke death.
No. He could not throw her away. He could leave her body to be discovered in the garbage area. That would have to be good enough.
Turning around, Lizzy came to a stop when she noticed him. Her lips arched into a gentle smile, but then she paused. The smile slid off her face.
“Hi,” she said, pausing for a moment to take the man in. Was he the same guy that nearly bumped into her minutes earlier? He didn’t have any trash bags. Why was he back here? The beginning tremors of her flight or fight response zapped to life inside her gut.
“Hello,” he replied with a smirk.
That one word, laced with anger, brought a chill down her spine.
He pulled the cap off the needle but kept it hidden in his hands. His knuckles were white from clenching the needle in front of him so tightly. She wouldn’t get past him.
She’d been attacked before. She knew that a stranger could go from intimidating to dangerous in a heartbeat. “Can I help you?” she asked, her voice full of anxiety. “Are you looking for something?”
Sam couldn’t help but taunt her. “I’m looking for you.” He hoped the admission scared her. He wanted to treasure this interaction. Maybe it would replace the nightmares that haunted him.
Lizzy cocked her head to the side, “You were looking for me? Why?” The sinister look in his eyes confirmed the warning bells clanging in her ears.
“Don’t I look familiar?” he asked, taking a step towards her.
This was way past creepy. “Do I know you from somewhere?” Her eyebrows pulled together as she desperately tried to place him. Where had she seen his face before?
“That’s because we’ve met.” He took a step towards her, a fake smile plastered on his face. Once he got close to her, he could slide the needle into her flesh with very little chance of a fight. If it did come to a fight, he knew he’d win. He may be nearing retirement age, but he was still stronger and bigger than her.
“Huh,” she looked around for something to pick up to use as a weapon in case she needed to defend herself. Rocks and some sticks lay on the ground along the fence wall, but she’d never get to them before he’d get to her.
Her flight or fight response flooded her body with adrenaline. Her pulse beat wildly and sweat coated her. “You do look a little familiar. Do you have a child at Carrisburg Elementary School?” If this was a parent from school, this scary vibe would be a first. Parents were always friendly when they saw her outside of school but following her to her apartment building and the trash bin was beyond disturbing.
She tried to think back to her list of students. Did any of them have special arrangements because of family issues? Any custody issues or abusive parents that she needed to be aware of? She didn’t recall any.
Sam bit out a harsh grunt. “No. You don’t know me from school, but you do know my son. His name is Jason. Does that name ring a bell?” Would the callous bitch recognize Jason’s name?
“Umm,” she mumbled. She’d had a Jason a few years ago, but this man didn’t look like his dad.
Sam stood shocked, angered, ready to blow. “You dumb bitch,” he seethed. “You don’t even remember the young man you destroyed. The life you tossed away,” he motioned with his arm as if he were throwing something away.
Damn! Lizzy had no idea what he was talking about, but she knew enough to recognize crazy and dangerous. “I’m sorry. I think you have the wrong person,” she stated as firmly as she could. Should she try to rationalize with the man? Get him to see that she is not the person he’s looking for?
“I’ve never killed anyone, not even by accident,” she stated. She’d been in a fender bender a few years ago, but everyone had been fine. There hadn’t even been a boy in either of the cars.
Her mind screamed for her to run, to get away from this man, but logic kept her feet planted. She had nowhere to go. He blocked the exit. If she ran, she’d be running towards him. And the wooden fencing that surrounded her on all the other sides cut off any chance of escape.
“Jason Clark,” Sam said the name with perfect enunciation. There would be no mistaking the name he said. “Does that ring a bell?” His grimace took on the diabolical look of Pennywise.
Lizzy took in a strangled breath as memories of Jason and his father on the witness stand rushed through her mind. Jason had murdered a man, and she’d sent him to jail.
