After her favorite aunt is found dead and an alarming box is mysteriously left on the doorstep of her aunt’s house now legally hers, Lavinia Esposito wants explanations. But, having cleared the package of explosives, the local cops are dumbounded by the precious stones which came without an explanation, just an address─her Aunt Livvy’s. Frustrated by the cops’ refusal to share their theories, criminal justice instructor Lavinia Esposito, a.k.a. Vinnie, takes investigation matters into her own hands. Vinnie is soon dragged into situations beyond her control, finding herself in hot water with the law, the crooks, and her Italian father. Willing to put her life at risk to find out what really happened to her beloved Aunt Livvy, and why jewels would be addressed to her aunt, Vinnie plunges ahead with her usual tenacity, bravery, and keen wits to solve and survive this mystery.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

It wasn’t long before the limber old guy came into view as he hot footed down the street with a stethoscope in his hand. This particular piece of equipment wasn’t quite what I’d expected, but then he wasn’t a bomb expert either.

When he arrived on the doorstep slightly out of breath, he glanced at the parcel, and then turned toward me.

“This was just delivered, you say?” MacNert squinted toward me with wizened brown eyes that twinkled all the time. It was as though there was a private joke going on inside his head.

“Yeah, someone knocked on the door, and when I got here to answer, there was nobody around. It didn’t seem prudent to mess with it, so I called you.”

“You just finished that bomb class, eh?” He chuckled and then sobered quickly. Since 9/11, everyone took stuff like this with a serious attitude. While he chuckled, I knew MacNert was no different.

The stethoscope ends plugged into his ears, Bill laid its diaphragm on top of the package. Removing it, he gingerly set it against the sides and listened again. I didn’t make a sound as he stood and glanced up.

“There’s no tickin’ but that doesn’t mean it’s not an explosive. You should probably call the state police barracks up the road. Have them send their bomb guys down for a lookie see, just to be on the safe side.”

“Geez, I hate to do that. I’ll feel stupid if it’s a joke,” I whined.

“It’s up to you, but if you were nervous enough to call me, then you should call them. It’s just my opinion, Vin.” He stepped over the box and wandered into the entryway. “Got anythin’ to eat? Wifey’s out of town visitin’ her sister and I’m starved.”

Bill didn’t seem over concerned, but then again, he hadn’t recently taken a bomb class either. My eyes never left the box as I answered him. “There’s food in the fridge, help yourself.”

I’d known the homely man and his family for years and respected his opinion. Tapping my fingers against my lips, I called after him, “You’re right. I’ll ring the state police now, but stick around okay?”

Unwilling to be nailed as over-dramatic by the staties, I reluctantly punched in the numbers. It was bad enough that the local cops had bugged the shit out of me for the first month after Aunt Livvy’s death. They still stopped by now and then, annoying me even more with stupid questions. Questions to which I had no answers.

After the trooper covering the desk answered, I explained what I’d found on the doorstep. He seemed unconcerned until I mentioned my name and address, and then he stated someone would be down momentarily. The swift change in his manner piqued my curiosity. I wondered why he’d suddenly capitulated when his initial response had been of disinterest.

The Book of Phoenix from Author Kristie Cook

Meet the Cast
By Kristie Cook

The Book of Phoenix contains a full cast of characters, each with their own backstory and issues, and you’re bound to fall in love with at least one. Each book follows the journey of Jeric and Leni as they discover their connection with each other and what they must do for the world, but each book also tells the story of how other Twin Flames come together. Twin Flames? You ask. Twin Flames are the two halves of a soul that’s been ripped apart, in this case by an evil ruler of the Dark worlds, Enyxa. In The Book of Phoenix trilogy, these halves must find each other and reunite so they can protect all of Earth’s beings from Enyxa and her Dark souls.

Leni – Half Italian and half French/African American (her mama’s from NOLA), she has light brown, curly hair, green eyes, and that beautiful complexion of mixed races. While her mother pushed her to be an international ballerina, she doesn’t have the body for it. She prefers hip-hop dancing, and she’s good at it. She has a particularly rare talent, but I’ll let you read the book to find out what it is. Her mother’s relentless push on her has created a number of issues that she deals with. Finding out that the world is not all it seems only adds more to her plate. She handles it fairly well, though – better than I ever could. Just imagine all proof that you exist disappearing! At least she has Jeric…

Jeric – Tall, blond, blue-eyed, tattooed, and pierced – and with his body, you can’t help but want to play with those piercings! An ex-cage fighter and ex-underwear model. And did I mention he’s deaf? He’s a player when we first meet him – okay, a man-whore – but only because he’s been searching for something he didn’t realize he’d been searching for. Leni. He’s vulgar with a horrible potty mouth, a bit terse, but also loving and kind. He’s been a loner for so long that he has a hard time accepting and adjusting to this new world he’s been thrown into. But Leni keeps him grounded, and you can feel his love for her coming off the pages (or ereader screen).

Jacey and Micah – You meet this couple through the pages of a journal found by Leni and Jeric. Their story took place in 1989 and includes a bunch of fun stuff from the ‘80s. Jacey was a punk-rocker chick and a mess, and Micah was an ex-Marine and also a mess. They seem like opposites, but they were made for each other.

Bex – Aw, Bex. She’s one of my most favorite characters I’ve ever written. I want to drink with her, laugh with her, and hug her all at once. With red hair, tattoos, and piercings, her favorite outfit is a halter-top, cut-off jean short-shorts, and cowboy boots. A Southern girl with all the charm and sass. She’s had one helluva a life with a drug-abusin’ mama who abandoned her and her sister, and it only gets crazier in The Space Beyond. She does meet her Twin Flame, but I’m not going to say who it is here because that’s what the book is all about! Both Books 2 and 3 are complete with some laugh-out-loud Bexisms.

Asia and Brock – You first meet this couple at the end of The Space Between and get to know them a little in The Space Beyond, but The Space Within is where you finally learn their story – and what it has to do with all of them and the rest of the world. Asia is the “skinny rich bitch” we loved to hate in high school, but while at college her life takes an unexpected turn that changes her and eventually leads to her meeting Brock. He’s the exact type that caused all of her problems, at least on the surface. But Brock is nothing like she expects. Sweet, kind, snarky, and can we say sexy??? He didn’t intend for his big secret to be a secret, but when Asia figures it out, she has to reevaluate everything. Again. And then things just get weird for them. But it’s all good in the end…maybe. You’ll have to read to find out. J

There are some other major characters you’ll meet, including the Lakari (aka Enyxa’s Dark souls), Enyxa herself, Mason (an attractive doctor who grabs Bex’s heart), and Ty (Bex’s childhood best friend and high school sweetheart who swears they’re made for each other). And some ancillary characters, too, who make up an interesting extended family for all of them. They’ve all made this trilogy such fun to write and I hope to read, too.

This is the best time to get to know them. Why? Because The Space Between is FREE and is also part of the Curses, Fates & Soul Mates: 5 Paranormal New Adult Novels that is on sale now for only 99c! AND, The Space Beyond is on sale through this Saturday, 9/6, for only 99c! With The Space Within priced at only $4.99, you can get 7 full-length novels, including a complete series, for less than $7! Not a bad deal, eh? I hope you’ll give it a try and also try out the series by the other authors in the box set. They’re amazing!

THE SPACE BETWEEN

When Life Falls to Pieces, Answers Lie in the Space Between

After a month-long dance tour overseas, Leni returns to Georgia to care for her great-uncle, only to find him gone, their home empty, and any evidence he ever existed wiped out. All that remains is her truck and a leather-bound book she can't open. Nearly as disturbing, she keeps running into the deaf and dangerously sexy model she'd met in Italy, and no matter how hard she tries to shake him, her soul won't let her.

Jeric has traveled the world in search of a piece of his past for over a year, only to reach a dead-end in Georgia ... in the exact town where the beautiful dancer from Italy lives. He's drawn to her like a moth to a flame, but his life as a loner in his silent world allows no room for girlfriends, and he tries to leave her. Except outside forces won't let him.

When the same "tattoos" suddenly appear on their arms and the book's lock falls open, Leni and Jeric realize there's more between them than physical fascination. They must embark on a journey together to discover their connection to each other and their ties to the Book of Phoenix.

And they must figure it all out fast. Shadowy forms that are more monsters than men are closing in, while their own existences are falling to pieces around them.

This first part of The Book of Phoenix takes you on a heart-wrenching ride as you discover the answers that lie in The Space Between.

THE SPACE BEYOND

Hearts break. Souls shatter. Love lies in The Space Beyond.

As members of the Phoenix, Jeric and Leni are thrust into their new lives, expected to lead Earth’s Guardians. But Leni struggles with trusting her own soul, and Jeric is more concerned about keeping Leni safe than meeting others’ demands. When Darkness swarms Lake Haven, they embark on their first mission with little preparation and no idea which soul the Dark hunts.

Born and raised in Lake Haven, Bex hopes to escape her small-town life, ideally in the arms of her soul mate. She knows he exists, and her heart aches with the need to find him. When her long-lost mama calls to announce she's knockin' on death's door, Bex reluctantly makes the trip to see the uncaring bitch (bless her heart), only to be knocked off her feet by the sexy and charming Dr. Mason Hayes. Is he really The One?

Leni’s soul felt an instant connection to Bex, but if Bex found her soul mate, she isn’t their mission. So who is, and why does Leni instinctively feel drawn to her? Can Leni even trust her intuition? And will Jeric step up and lead when the time comes or continue to hold them back?

If they don't learn to trust themselves and each other quickly, Darkness will claim them all…along with the rest of Earth’s souls.

The Space Within

When Darkness threatens, what matters most lies in The Space Within

Completing a mission that reunites Guardian Twin Flames turns devastating when the Book of Phoenix throws Leni and Brock into a Dark world, leaving Jeric and Asia behind. They count on their other halves to rescue them, but when that doesn’t happen, they must fight through the Darkness and find a Gate that will take them home.

Except all of Earth’s Gates are sealed.

Enyxa, ruler of Darkness, and her horde of Dark souls storm the Gates to push their way through to Earth. While Leni and Brock fight Enyxa on their side, Jeric and Asia must figure out how to save their Twin Flames without jeopardizing all of Earth’s souls. Through it all—and with a little help from Enyxa—Brock and Asia begin questioning their relationship and whether they’re truly meant to be together…or if they’re two Lost souls forced to become one.

If the Broken dyads don’t find each other fast, they’ll be lost to the Dark forever. But to reunite means choosing themselves over all of Earth’s souls. Can Jeric make that decision? And will Brock and Asia find the love they both desperately crave? Or are they all doomed to perpetual Darkness?

Discover how it all ends in The Space Within, the explosive conclusion to The Book of Phoenix trilogy.

Henry Sharpe is a recently bereaved and bankrupt English earl who travels to the Caribbean to help his uncle run his sugar plantation. When he arrives, he finds his uncle has given up on that idea to lead a more exciting life as a privateer. With no money and no prospects, Sharpe has little choice but to join him, although he is uncomfortable with the life he is living, especially when he meets the indomitable and infamous Henry Morgan and is forced to sail under his orders. He is more likely to rescue the doomed souls he meets than terrorise them, which leads to repeated conflict with his fellow privateers, especially when he takes the kidnapped Magdalena under his protection. Battling ships and the Spanish fortifications protecting Porto Belo, Sharpe finds his deadliest feuds are those aboard his own ship. Trapped in the middle of the rivalry between his uncle, Captain Richard Tarr, and Captain Edward Hornigold, Sharpe makes more enemies on deck, in particular the formidable yet sly Cheval. He is pushed to his limits as he fights for his own survival and that of the woman he loves, knowing the odds are stacked high against him.

I was given this series in exchange for an honest review

The Valkyrie Series comes highly recommended for those who enjoy historical reading. It is a romance but not erotica. I would rate this series as 5 star.

I really enjoyed these stories. One big plus was the period dialogue. The language used is one you can imagine pirates of olden days in the Caribbean might have used. From start to finish, these are stories the reader will find difficult to put down as the story telling is fast paced and leaves the reader wondering what happens next. The love story between Gabriella and Leo is slow to begin with but is as it should be. After all, we all know that mad, passionate love is something that takes time to build. They are a typical couple with all the ups and downs that come with a relationship.

They are very well written with no grammar or spelling issues.  An excellent series!
